Looking after the stone Harrogate was built on
Walk into a villa on the Duchy estate or a terrace off Cold Bath Road and the floor is often the first thing you notice. Harrogate kept its stone: marble vestibules in Montpellier, limestone hallways behind the tall frontages along West Park, geometric tiled porches in Bilton and Starbeck, flagstone kitchens out towards Pannal and Beckwithshaw. These floors were laid to last centuries, and with the right care they do. Our job is to bring them back, not to talk you into replacing them.
A century of footfall does predictable damage. Wax and varnish layers applied decades ago turn yellow and patchy. Acidic cleaners etch dull patches into limestone and marble, grout lines go grey, travertine pits fill with dirt, and original flagstones vanish under paint splashes and carpet adhesive. None of it needs a new floor. We identify the stone with quick acid and porosity tests, deep clean with heat-assisted detergents and grout-safe agitation, hone out damage with diamond pads and seal with a breathable impregnator.
DynoClean has been doing this work since 1999, and our base at Monkswell House in Knaresborough is four miles from Harrogate along the A59. That matters in practice: visits are easy to arrange, we can usually be with you the same week, and aftercare visits do not depend on a crew travelling over from Leeds or York. You deal with Steve and Ed, the two names customers keep mentioning in our Google reviews, every one of which is five stars.
What we clean and restore in Harrogate
Period floors respond best to the right method. We match machine, pad and chemistry to each individual stone.
Limestone cleaning & honing
Limestone is everywhere in Harrogate's hallways and kitchens, and it marks easily because it is calcareous. We deep clean with pH-appropriate chemistry, hone out etch marks and dull traffic lanes with diamond pads, then protect the surface with a breathable impregnating sealer matched to the stone.
Marble cleaning & polishing
Montpellier and Duchy entrance halls often have marble that has gone flat where feet cross it daily. Progressive diamond polishing brings the reflection back in stages, so you choose the sheen, honed matt, satin or high gloss, and we can note gloss readings at handover.
Yorkstone & flagstone restoration
Original flagstone kitchens survive in farmhouses and cottages from Pannal up to Pateley Bridge, usually buried under decades of wax, paint and grime. We strip the build-up with heat-assisted detergents, recover the slurry, and finish with a breathable sealer so the sandstone can still release moisture.
Victorian & Minton tiles
Harrogate's terraces kept their tiled porches and hallway paths, and they are worth saving. We deep clean the tiles without harming original glazes, rake out and replace failed grout to match the joints, and repair loose or chipped sections before sealing with a matt, breathable finish.
Travertine cleaning & repair
Travertine's natural holes gradually pack with dirt, which is why so many honed travertine kitchens end up looking grey. We flush out the soil, fill open pits with colour-matched resin where you want them closed, then hone and seal so the floor cleans easily again.
Slate cleaning & sealing
Slate hearths and kitchen floors suffer from old topical dressings that wear patchy and trap dirt. We strip the failed coatings, deep clean the stone, consolidate any flaking areas with high-strength resins, and refinish either naturally or with a colour-enhancing sealer that deepens the slate's tone.
Floor grinding & seamless floors
We diamond-grind stone, terrazzo and concrete flat, then restore or lay seamless resin and polished finishes. It levels lippage and trip edges in Harrogate kitchens, extensions and commercial units, leaving one continuous, easy-to-clean surface.
Full re-grouts
Cracked, stained or failed grout is raked out and renewed across the whole floor rather than patched. We colour-match and reseal the joints, which on a tiled Harrogate hallway or wet room refreshes the entire floor.

What happens when you book a survey
First visit and test patch
We visit, identify the stone with quick acid and porosity tests, check for previous coatings and clean a sample patch so you can see the finish before committing. You get a written, no-obligation quote with timings and no hidden fees.
Protection and setup
Skirting boards, cabinets and adjacent rooms are masked and protected before any machine starts. On commercial sites we prepare RAMS and COSHH documentation as standard, and DBS-checked technicians are available where the setting requires it.
Deep clean and repairs
Heat-assisted detergents and grout-safe agitation lift years of soil and old residues, with the slurry recovered rather than left to dry in. Agreed repairs happen now: colour-matched resin fills, hairline crack injections, and raking out and replacing failed grout.
Hone, polish and seal
Diamond pads refine the surface in progressive steps to the sheen you chose, matt, satin or high gloss. After a measured dry-down, we apply an impregnating or colour-enhancing sealer matched to the stone and how the room is used.
Handover and aftercare
You get before and after photos, a walk-through of the finished floor and a written aftercare guide: neutral cleaner only, felt pads under furniture, and when to book a sealer top-up. Optional gloss and slip readings are available on request.
Where we work in and around Harrogate
Harrogate's stone-floored housing is concentrated in the streets between the Stray and Valley Gardens, so that is where much of the demand comes from: Montpellier, West Park, the Duchy estate and the terraces off Cold Bath Road. We cover the whole HG postcode area though, from Bilton, Jennyfields and Starbeck across to Oatlands, Harlow Hill, Pannal and Killinghall.
Being based at Monkswell House in Knaresborough puts us closer to Harrogate than the York and Leeds firms competing for this work. The same short run covers Ripon, Wetherby, Boroughbridge and Pateley Bridge, so wherever you are in the district, a visit is easy to arrange, usually within days.
Commercial stone floors: hotels, offices and shops
Harrogate trades on how it looks, and nowhere more than its hotels, tea rooms, spas and the independent shops along James Street and Parliament Street. A marble reception or terrazzo corridor that has gone grey undoes a lot of good work elsewhere. We clean and restore commercial stone out of hours, evenings, overnight or weekends, so trading is not interrupted, with RAMS and COSHH prepared for every project, adjacent areas protected, and a photo report plus optional slip and gloss readings at sign-off. For front-of-house floors that take constant footfall, our scheduled clean, burnish and reseal programmes keep the finish consistent and put off expensive replacement. DBS-checked technicians are available for schools, healthcare and care settings across the district.
